The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religion<\/span> emerged on the plantations of Saint-Domingue in the 17th and 18th centuries and survived as the de facto religion of independent Haiti, even though it was repeatedly suppressed politically.<\/p><p>At its centre stand the <strong>lwa<\/strong> (also loa), not gods in the Hellenistic sense but mediating <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which effects in the world are attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> beings who descend through possession rituals. They are organised into two large families: Rada (cool, regular, often traditionally African: Damballa, Erzulie Freda, Papa Legba) and Petwo (hot, fast, often Creole and revolutionary: Erzulie Dantor, Baron Samedi).<\/p><p>Characteristic is the <strong>Catholic and African dual identity<\/strong>. Each lwa has a Catholic saint as a visual and onomastic disguise: Damballa is depicted as Saint Patrick with serpents, Papa Legba as Saint Peter with keys.<\/p><p>This doubling is not superficial <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"The merging of elements from different religions or cults into mixed forms, as in Haitian Vodou.\">syncretism<\/span> but a deliberate survival strategy under Christian rule. The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the gods of a religion or culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">pantheon<\/span> comprises the universal principle <em>Bondye<\/em> (the supreme power) and the <em>lwa<\/em>, powerful mediating <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirits<\/span> organised into families (Rada the gentle, Petwo the intense, Gede of death).<\/p><p>Important lwa include Damballa (grandfather, serpent), Papa Legba (gatekeeper), Erzulie (love, warrior) and Baron Samedi (death, laughter). Belief in the power of the dead and the ancestors is central. Vodou is not monolithic; Haitian, Louisiana, Dominican and Cuban variants exist. Colonial suppression and modern criminalisation have stigmatised Vodou. Altars bearing lwa symbols, candles and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An offering to a deity to express gratitude, petition, or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">offerings<\/span> serve as household shrines.<\/p><p><em>Gris-gris<\/em> (an <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A worn object to which a protective, evil-averting effect is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">amulet<\/span>) and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special actions or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magical<\/span> practices are part of daily life. Conjurations against malevolent sorcery (<em>vaudoux noir<\/em>) are routine. Drum music and dance are <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An ordered sequence of symbolic actions with religious or cultural meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">ritual<\/span>.<\/p><p>Funerals and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Veneration of a family's deceased members as enduringly active protective powers.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancestor veneration<\/span> are central. Healers and herbalists hold specialised roles. <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A ritual transition through which someone is admitted into a new status or community.\" tabindex=\"0\">Initiation<\/span> into the Vodou brotherhood requires lengthy training. It remains stigmatised through criminalisation (the zombi <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A handed-down narrative about gods, origins and the order of the world.\" tabindex=\"0\">myth<\/span>, witch-hunt narratives) and Western ignorance.<\/p><p>Hollywood and pop culture have instrumentalised Vodou as a horror trope (zombie films, voodoo dolls). Academically, Vodou is studied as a synthesis religion and a practice of resistance (postcolonial, decolonial).<\/p><p>Its diaspora reception in the USA, France and other countries is heterogeneous. The 2010 Haiti earthquake and the cholera epidemic altered religious interpretations. Political instrumentalisation and criminal practices have damaged trust. Young Haitians assimilate or leave the tradition behind. The global <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Collective term for teachings that claim a hidden knowledge accessible only to initiates.\" tabindex=\"0\">esoteric<\/span> reception is romanticised and inaccurate. Spiritual dignity and cultural sovereignty remain central struggles.<\/p><h3>Religious-Studies Research in the 20th Century<\/h3><p>Academic engagement with Vodou in the 20th century was shaped by several pioneering works. In 1959 Alfred M\u00e9traux published &#8220;Le Vaudou Ha\u00eftien&#8221;, the first systematic ethnographic description of the tradition; it remains the methodological reference to this day.<\/p><p>Maya Deren added an art-historical and anthropological perspective with &#8220;Divine Horsemen&#8221; (1953); her film recordings of ritual events are of inestimable documentary value.<\/p><p>More recent scholarship, Karen McCarthy Brown, Leslie Desmangles, Elizabeth McAlister, has placed greater emphasis on the diaspora dimension and understood the tradition as a living, continuously evolving religious practice rather than an ethnographic fossil.<\/p><h3>Vodou and the Political History of Haiti<\/h3><p><span data-nosnippet>In terms of religious history, Vodou cannot be separated from the political history of Haiti. The Haitian Revolution (1791 to 1804), the only successful slave revolution in history, had strong Vodou components; the Bois Ca\u00efman <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A solemn act performed according to fixed rules.\" tabindex=\"0\">ceremony<\/span> of 1791 has become iconic.<\/span><\/p><p>In post-colonial history Vodou was by turns suppressed (especially under the anti-<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A pejorative term for ideas regarded as unfounded in religious terms.\" tabindex=\"0\">superstition<\/span> campaigns of the 1940s) and politically instrumentalised (especially under Duvalier&#8217;s Tonton Macoute regime). Only in 2003 was Vodou legalised as an official religion of Haiti.<\/p><h3>Vodou in the Diaspora<\/h3><p>With the Haitian diaspora since the 1960s, above all to New York, Miami, Montreal and Paris, Vodou has also become a living religion in Western countries.<\/p><p>The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure dedicated to the worship of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temples<\/span> (ounf\u00f2) in the diaspora cities have developed their own structures, often with adaptations to the legal and social conditions of the respective host countries. Karen McCarthy Brown&#8217;s study &#8220;Mama Lola&#8221; (1991) offers a particularly detailed inside view of a Brooklyn-based Vodou <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span>.<\/p><h3>Stereotypes and Their Reappraisal<\/h3><p>In Western pop culture Vodou is marked by powerful stereotypes: the voodoo doll, the zombi, &#8220;black <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special acts or formulae.\" tabindex=\"0\">magic<\/span>&#8220;.<\/p><p><span data-nosnippet>These images go far back: to the Hollywood films of the 1930s (&#8220;White Zombie&#8221;, 1932), to the anti-Haitian US propaganda during the American occupation of 1915 to 1934, and ultimately to the colonial discourses of exoticisation under the slave economy.<\/span><\/p><p><span data-nosnippet>The religious-studies research of recent decades has critically reappraised these stereotypes (for instance Mimi Sheller, &#8220;Consuming the Caribbean&#8221;, 2003).
