The two traditions have strongly influenced one another.<\/p><p>Tibetan <strong>Buddhism<\/strong> is exceptionally rich in classes of beings. Buddhas, bodhisattvas and meditative <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"In Tibetan Buddhism, a meditation deity with which a practitioner works through identification in order to embody aspects of enlightenment.\">yidam<\/span> deities belong to the enlightened sphere. Alongside them stand the dharmapalas, protector deities such as Mahakala, Palden Lhamo, Yamantaka and Pehar, who guard monastic lineages and Buddhist teachings. They may be depicted in peaceful or wrathful form.<\/p><p>From the <strong><span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"The pre-Buddhist religious tradition of Tibet; works with Tsen, Nyen, Lu and Du as a classification.\">Bon<\/span> layer and folk <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religion<\/span><\/strong> come further beings: Klu (<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"Semi-divine serpent beings of the Indian tradition; in the Tibetan adaptation transformed into water spirits as Lu.\">naga<\/span>-like water <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirits<\/span>), Tsen (mountain spirits), Mamo (<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to the earth or the underworld; in ancient religion the gods and spirits of the depths (Hades, the Erinyes, Demeter chthonia).\" tabindex=\"0\">chthonic<\/span> women), Bon gods such as Tonpa Shenrab. Buddhism arrived in the 7th century and synthesized with Bonpo elements.<\/p><p>The legendary figure Padmasambhava (8th century) is regarded as the founder of Tibetan Buddhism and integrated local <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A spiritual being to which harmful or ambivalent effect is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">demons<\/span> and spirits as Buddhist protector deities. The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the gods of a religion or culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">pantheon<\/span> is complex: Buddha forms, bodhisattvas, local protector deities (often fearsome), lamas as reincarnated beings (<em>tulkus<\/em>).<\/p><p><span data-nosnippet>Tantric practice celebrates transgressive symbols and ecstatic techniques. The <em>Bardo Thodol<\/em> teaching describes the state between death and rebirth. Practice varies regionally (Gelug, Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya schools). The Chinese invasion of Tibet (1950) and the Cultural Revolution (1966 to 1976) persecuted Buddhism intensely. The exile system under the Dalai Lama (until 2011) created external authorities. New generations struggle with modern life versus traditional practices. Environmental and human rights questions complicate the reception.
