These layers did not replace one another but interpenetrated each other, down to the present day.<\/p><p>The <strong>Mu-Sok<\/strong> is the oldest layer. Mudang (female shamans) mediate between people and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirits<\/span> through gut rituals, in which gods and ancestors descend. The cosmological world knows heavenly gods (Cheongun), mountain spirits (Sansin), <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An ancestor venerated in many cultures as a protective power.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancestral<\/span> spirits, and especially powerful dead who can be raised to the status of deities.<\/p><p>The <strong>Buddhism<\/strong> developed a rich Korean school (Seon, related to East Asian Zen), while Confucianism shaped the social order and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Veneration of a family's deceased as continuing protective powers.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancestor worship<\/span>. Alongside these exists a world of folk spirits: Cheonyeo-Gwishin (the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which effects in the world are attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> of an unmarried deceased woman), Mul-Gwishin (water spirits), Tokkaebi (goblin-like beings). The tradition varies considerably from region to region.<\/p><p>With modernisation and Christianisation (Korea is about 30 percent Christian), traditional practices were marginalised. Household-<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An elevated place or table for offerings and religious acts.\" tabindex=\"0\">altar<\/span> veneration of house spirits and ancestors is an everyday matter. Ancestral festivals (Seollal, Chuseok) structure the year with spiritual and family rituals.<\/p><p>Protective rituals against evil spirits and harmful influences are widespread. The veneration of mountain spirits and water beings connects <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A religious system in which specialists interact with the world of spirits.\" tabindex=\"0\">shamanism<\/span> and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Chinese religious-philosophical tradition oriented toward the Dao, the Way.\" tabindex=\"0\">Daoism<\/span>.
