Yet over the 2,500 years since his teaching, diverse cosmological systems have developed: Tibetan Vajrayana with hundreds of Buddha aspects, East Asian Mahayana with celestial Bodhisattvas, South Asian Theravada with local protective <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirits<\/span>.<\/p><p>At the center stands the <strong><span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In Mahayana Buddhism, an enlightened being who postpones their liberation for the sake of teaching other beings.\" tabindex=\"0\">Bodhisattva<\/span> doctrine<\/strong>: enlightened beings who postpone their entry into Nirvana in order to help all living beings toward liberation. Avalokiteshvara, Tara, Manjushri and Kshitigarbha are not gods in the theistic sense, but embodiments of compassionate enlightenment energy. They can be <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The petitioning or invoking address to a deity or power.\" tabindex=\"0\">invoked<\/span>, meditated upon and ritualized.<\/p><p>Alongside these, Buddhism also recognizes <strong>genuinely demonic beings<\/strong>: pretas, naraka guardians, hungry ghosts, asuras. The veneration of Bodhisattvas and local protective deities is common in private homes.
