Vishnu appears as Rama, as Krishna, as Buddha; Shiva as Rudra or as Bhairava. The Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) represents cosmic functions (creation, preservation, dissolution).<\/p><p>Each <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Ein als g\u00f6ttlich verehrtes Wesen innerhalb einer Religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> has multiple aspects and localisations: Durga, Kali and Lakshmi embody different emanations. Vedanta philosophy presented the abstract <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In Hinduism the absolute, formless, attributeless being; reflected in the Upanishads as the ground of all appearances.\" tabindex=\"0\">Brahman<\/span> as the ultimate reality, while the Bhakti movement celebrated personal relationships with God.<\/p><p><span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In den indischen Religionen die Lehre und die rechte Ordnung des Handelns.\" tabindex=\"0\">Dharma<\/span> (ethics), Karma (action and its consequences) and Samsara (the cycle) form the cosmological structure. Which <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Ein als g\u00f6ttlich verehrtes Wesen innerhalb einer Religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> is regarded as the highest reality, which texts are recognised as authoritative and how worship is shaped differs considerably from current to current.<\/p><p>Most of the beings described on this page do not belong to \u201cHinduism\u201d in general, but have their place within one of these traditions. A brief overview helps to classify them correctly.<\/p><p><strong>Vishnuism<\/strong> (Vaishnavism) venerates Vishnu and his descents, especially Krishna and Rama, as the highest <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Ein als g\u00f6ttlich verehrtes Wesen innerhalb einer Religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span>. It is the largest current in numerical terms and shapes large parts of northern and western India. At its centre stands personal <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A brief, personal or communal religious contemplation.\" tabindex=\"0\">devotion<\/span> (Bhakti) to an accessible, gracious God.<\/p><p><strong>Shivaism<\/strong> (Shaivism) places Shiva at the centre, who is at once ascetic, destroyer and renewer. This current includes philosophical schools such as Kashmir Shaivism, as well as ascetic orders and Tantric lineages.<\/p><p><strong>Shaktism<\/strong> venerates the divine power in feminine form, for instance as Durga, Kali or Lalita. Here the goddess is regarded not as the companion of a male <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Ein als g\u00f6ttlich verehrtes Wesen innerhalb einer Religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span>, but as the active reality itself. Shaktism is closely bound up with Tantric practice.<\/p><p><strong>Smartism<\/strong>, finally, knows no single highest <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Ein als g\u00f6ttlich verehrtes Wesen innerhalb einer Religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> but regards several principal deities as equivalent approaches to an abstract ultimate reality (Brahman). It is strongly shaped by Vedanta philosophy.<\/p><p>Alongside these classical currents, organised reform and devotional movements have arisen over the past two hundred years or so. One of them is the <strong>Swaminarayan tradition<\/strong>, founded in the early 19th century by Bhagwan Swaminarayan in Gujarat and close to Vishnuism.<\/p><p>From it emerged, among others, the community <strong>BAPS<\/strong> (Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha), formalised in the early 20th century by Shastriji Maharaj.<\/p><p>Its body of teaching, the Akshar Purushottam doctrine, distinguishes between the highest God (Purushottam) and an eternal divine being assigned to him (Akshar), said to be present in a continuous line of spiritual teachers.<\/p><p>BAPS maintains more than a thousand <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Ein Bauwerk, das der Verehrung einer oder mehrerer Gottheiten dient.\" tabindex=\"0\">temples<\/span> worldwide and is also represented in Europe and North America with large complexes. It shows that Hinduism is not a closed <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Die Gesamtheit der \u00fcberlieferten G\u00f6ttererz\u00e4hlungen einer Kultur.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythology<\/span> but a living religion with ongoing theological development.<\/p><p>This section will be expanded at a later point with <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Handed over to the sacred through a religious act and thereby set apart from the everyday.\" tabindex=\"0\">dedicated<\/span> pages on individual currents and movements.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-x-hinduismus-s101 e-con-boxed e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"x-hinduismus-s101\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-x-hinduismus-h101 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"x-hinduismus-h101\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Beings in Everyday Life<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aj11-inner-0005 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"aj11-inner-0005\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-x-hinduismus-t101 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"x-hinduismus-t101\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Hindu practice runs through the daily life of roughly a billion people: daily Puja (a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A fixed, recurring religious act.\" tabindex=\"0\">rite<\/span> of veneration), a household <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An elevated place or table for offerings and religious acts.\" tabindex=\"0\">altar<\/span> with the family\u2019s patron deities, pilgrimages to <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to the divine and thereby withdrawn from everyday use.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacred<\/span> rivers and temples. Major festivals such as Diwali, Holi and Navaratri give the year a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Zu einem festgelegten religi\u00f6sen Handlungsablauf geh\u00f6rig.\" tabindex=\"0\">ritual<\/span> structure.<\/p><p><span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Gabe an eine Gottheit, um Dank, Bitte oder Verehrung auszudr\u00fccken.\" tabindex=\"0\">Offerings<\/span>, mantras and meditations are everyday practices. Visits to priests, yogis and healers belong to spiritual hygiene. Protective threads, Yantras (mystical diagrams) and mantras serve personal defence. Regional variation is great: some communities venerate Tantric deities, others follow Bhakti traditions.
