The pre-Christian Slavs had no writing; what we know about their gods comes from Byzantine and Arabic travel accounts, Christian sermons against idolatry, and the ethnographic collections of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.<\/p><p>The gods Perun, Veles and Mokosh can be reconstructed only in outline.<\/p><p>The <strong>true wealth lies in folk religion<\/strong>: household spirits (Domovoi, Domovik), spirits of the terrain (Leshy in the forest, Vodyanoy in the water), spirits of disease (Kikimora, Mara), and beings of the dead and the ancestors.<\/p><p>This layer outlasted Christianization and merged with the veneration of saints, so that Saint Elijah took the place of Perun and the Mother of God assumed the functions of Mokosh.<\/p><p>The <strong>academic treatment<\/strong> (Gieysztor, Ma\u0144czak, Jakobson) has drawn methodically above all on comparison with Baltic and Indo-European <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The entirety of the transmitted divine narratives of a culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythology<\/span>. The Christianization of the 9th to 12th centuries was intensive and displaced the tradition.<\/p><p>Folk tradition with its household spirits, forest demons and water beings nonetheless survived in <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The transmitted folk culture, with customs, narratives and songs.\" tabindex=\"0\">folklore<\/span>. The system was less extensively documented in writing than the religions of Western Europe; the written sources arose after Christianization and are ideologically distorted.<\/p><p>Regional variation was considerable (East Slavs, West Slavs, South Slavs). Modern sources for its reconstruction are speculative. The <em>Domovoi<\/em> (household spirits) were popular and required respectful treatment. The <em>Leshy<\/em> (forest spirits) and the <em>Rusalka<\/em> (water nymphs) were part of everyday belief.<\/p><p>Folk medicine using herbs and incantations is documented. Shamans and wise men (often repurposed as priests with Christianization) administered contact with the spirits. Priests presided over public <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A gift to a deity, expressing thanks, petition or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacrifice<\/span>.<\/p><p>With Christianization, many practices were reshaped into Christian forms (for example, Christmas replaced a fire festival). <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Religiosity as lived in everyday life, often alongside official doctrine.\" tabindex=\"0\">Popular piety<\/span> within Christianity retained a belief in spirits. <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Synonymous with heathen; belonging to a pre-Christian religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">Pagan<\/span> practices judged sinful continued underground.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-x-slawisch-s102 e-con-boxed e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"x-slawisch-s102\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-x-slawisch-h102 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"x-slawisch-h102\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Significance today<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aj11-inner-0007 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"aj11-inner-0007\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-x-slawisch-t102 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"x-slawisch-t102\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Slavic religion no longer exists as an organic faith tradition. The modern <em>Rodnovery<\/em> movement (<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Synonymous with heathen; belonging to a pre-Christian religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">pagan<\/span>, Slavic, nationalist) has attempted a reconstruction since the 1980s, but is ideologically right-leaning and speculative.<\/p><p>Popular culture (Slavic fantasy, video games) draws on Slavic <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The entirety of the transmitted divine narratives of a culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythology<\/span> for its aesthetic. Western <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Collective term for teachings that claim a hidden knowledge accessible only to initiates.\" tabindex=\"0\">esoteric<\/span> circles have ignored or marginalized the Slavic tradition. Literature and folk tradition (Russian fairy tales, Baba Yaga) are cultural treasures. Nationalist politicization has compromised the tradition.
