What we know stems almost entirely from late Christian Icelandic <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">transmission<\/span>: the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda were compiled in the 13th century, long after Norse paganism had ceased to be a living religion.<\/p><p>Pre-Christian inscriptions, runes and place names supplement this picture, but do not replace it.<\/p><p>At the centre stand <strong>two families of gods<\/strong>: the warlike Aesir around Odin, Thor, Tyr and Frigg, and the fertility-related Vanir around Freyr, Freyja and Njord. Mythologically the system is dynamic: it ends in Ragnarok, the doom of the gods, and thereby gains an eschatological depth that other polytheistic systems do not possess.<\/p><p>The <strong>popular religion<\/strong> revolved around protective spirits: house spirits (Hausvaettr), land spirits (Landvaettir), fylgjur (personal spirits of fate) and disir (female <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An ancestor venerated in many cultures as a protective power.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancestral<\/span> spirits). Skalds and priests administered the mythological knowledge. Protective rituals and runic writing served spiritual defence.<\/p><p>Christianisation from the 8th to the 12th century displaced these practices; yet they endured in folk traditions (Walpurgis Night, May festivals) and in regional beliefs about spirits. <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which effects in the world are attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">Spirit<\/span> beings such as <em>alfar<\/em> (elves) and <em>disir<\/em> (protective spirits) remained present in folk tradition. The modern <em>Asatru<\/em> movement has attempted a revival since the 20th century, but is ideologically heterogeneous and has been co-opted by right-wing extremist groups.<\/p><p>Popular culture (Tolkien, Marvel&#8217;s Thor, video games) has aestheticised Norse <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the transmitted narratives about the gods of a culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythology<\/span> and made it available to mass culture.
