Nevertheless, the Jewish tradition knows a rich spectrum of spiritual beings: <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In the Abrahamic religions, a heavenly messenger being of God.\" tabindex=\"0\">angels<\/span> (Malachim), <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A spiritual being to which harmful or ambivalent effect is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">demons<\/span> (Shedim, Mazzikim), and, in the mystical tradition, more complex hierarchies.<\/p><p>The <strong><span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In the Abrahamic religions, a heavenly messenger being of God.\" tabindex=\"0\">angel<\/span> doctrine<\/strong> is well attested in the Bible, with Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel as the four archangels, and the Seraphim and Cherubim as heavenly beings around the throne.<\/p><p>The later rabbinic and kabbalistic tradition expanded these structures: Metatron as the &#8220;lesser YHWH&#8221;, Sandalphon as his counterpart, and alongside them <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In the Abrahamic religions, a heavenly messenger being of God.\" tabindex=\"0\">angels<\/span> of the individual spheres (Sefirot).<\/p><p>The <strong>demonology<\/strong> derives from post-exilic Judaism with Babylonian influence: Lilith as a night <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A spiritual being to which harmful or ambivalent effects are attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">demon<\/span>, Asmodeus as king of the Shedim, Azazel as a wilderness demon.<\/p><p>Medieval Jewish <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special acts or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magic<\/span> (Sefer Raziel, Sefer Yetzirah) and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Current of Jewish mysticism with principal works such as the Sefer Yetzirah and the Zohar.\" tabindex=\"0\">Kabbalah<\/span> (<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Principal work of medieval Jewish mysticism (Spain, 13th c.); kabbalistic Torah interpretation.\" tabindex=\"0\">Zohar<\/span>, the Lurianic school) developed elaborate systems of protection and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A verbal ritual intended to summon or bind a power.\" tabindex=\"0\">conjuration<\/span>.
