The Irish <em>Puca<\/em> is a shapeshifter, now a black horse, now a dark humanoid, who confuses travellers, leads them astray onto byways, and brings misfortune if not treated respectfully.<\/p><p>The Scottish <em>Leanan Sidhe<\/em> (&#8220;fairy woman&#8221;) is female, seduces poets and artists, grants them inspiration, but consumes them in the process, a Faustian <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"In the Christian-medieval tradition, a formal contract between a human and a demon, often signed in blood.\">pact<\/span> in the forest.<\/p><p>In European <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The inherited folk culture with customs, tales and songs.\" tabindex=\"0\">folklore<\/span>, the <em>Wild Hunters<\/em> or <em>Wild Host<\/em> are processions of forest spirits that ride by night and can sweep mortal people along if they do not seek refuge in time.<\/p><div><h3>Slavic Leshy and Japanese Tengu: Lords of the Forest<\/h3><p>In Slavic <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The inherited folk culture with customs, tales and songs.\" tabindex=\"0\">folklore<\/span>, the <em>Leshy<\/em> (also Leshii) is a great forest spirit that can appear as an animal or a human.<\/p><p>He possesses the woodland absolutely; hunters and gatherers must bring him offerings or lose their way. The Leshy is not evil, but dangerous through indifference; he protects his territory, but also kills on a whim.<\/p><p>The Japanese <em>Tengu<\/em> is similar, a bird <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A spiritual being to which harmful or ambivalent effects are attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">demon<\/span> or forest spirit that seduces monks, abducts people and occasionally helps.
