They differ from high deities in that they are specialised and personally accessible.<\/p><p>A mortal can pray to Bes and hope for direct intervention; with Zeus this is less personal. Protective deities are also not neutral like deities of the dead: they have explicit loyalties and preferences. Some are older (primordial), some arose from mortal veneration.<\/p><div><p><strong>The Depth of Protective Deities in the History of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">Religion<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p>In terms of the history of religion, the class of protective deities is one of the oldest fields of functionally specific divine veneration. The oldest evidence is found in the early Mesopotamian <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span>: Ninurta as protective god of the city of Nippur, Marduk as protective god of Babylon, Ashur as protective god of Assyria.<\/p><p>This configuration of the urban protective god (<em>poliuchos<\/em> in the later Greek tradition) runs through all advanced civilisations with organised urban culture, from Athena as protective goddess of Athens to Quirinus, Mars and Jupiter as protective gods of Rome, through to Inari as protective god of the Japanese rice harvest and household.<\/p><p>From a phenomenological perspective, protective deities differ from high deities through their functional specificity: they are not responsible for the creation of the world or the cosmic balance, but for a concrete sphere that is to be protected.<\/p><p><span data-nosnippet>This sphere may be a city, a profession, a stage of life, a group of people or a particular activity. Bes <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A worn object to which a protective, misfortune-averting effect is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">amulets<\/span> were extremely popular; households prayed to Bes daily.<\/p><p>The Egyptian <em>Taweret<\/em> (also <em>Tauret<\/em>) is a hippopotamus goddess, protector of pregnant women and newborns, a maternal figure with enormous <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of religious acts of veneration directed at a deity or sacred figure.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult<\/span> influence. The Greek <em>Hecate<\/em> is goddess of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special acts or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magic<\/span>, boundaries, crossroads and witchcraft; she is venerated at boundaries and crossroads, not in temples.<\/p><p>The Scottish <em>Cailleach<\/em> is an <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Epoch of Greek and Roman culture, roughly 800 BC to 600 AD.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancient<\/span> goddess or <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which effects in the world are attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> figure (ambiguity is characteristic) who watches over herds, winter and mountain landscapes; she is fearsome but necessary.<\/p><p>The Roman <em>Vesta<\/em> protects the hearth fire and public order; the Vestals were her priestesses. The Hindu <em>Ganesha<\/em> is protector of beginnings and obstacles; every significant undertaking begins with the veneration of Ganesha.<\/p><div><p><strong>Examples from Further Cultures<\/strong><\/p><p>The Jewish tradition has no elaborated concept of a protective god in the polytheistic sense, but functionally analogous are the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An angel to which the protection of an individual person is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">guardian angels<\/span> (<em>malakhe ha-sharet<\/em>), assigned to individual persons, places or tasks.<\/p><p>In Christianity this function is taken over by the tradition of patron saints, with more than 10,000 saints and their specific areas of responsibility.<\/p><p>In Islam the function is distributed partly among the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In the Abrahamic religions, a heavenly messenger being of God.\" tabindex=\"0\">angels<\/span> (<em><span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Arabic 'the angels'; in the Quran the cosmological class of angels, of whom Gabriel, Michael and Israfil are the most important.\" tabindex=\"0\">Mala&#8217;ika<\/span><\/em>) and partly among the <em>Awliyya<\/em> (saints).
