In the Hurrian-Hittite reception he appears as the second king in heaven in the Kumarbi Cycle, a position that makes him a central, though transitional, figure of the theogony.<\/p><p>In <em>Geschichte der hethitischen <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">Religion<\/span><\/em> (1994), Volkert Haas described in detail the adoption of Mesopotamian gods into the Hurrian <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the gods of a religion or culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">pantheon<\/span>.<\/p><p>In the history of religion, Anu is an example of the migration of Mesopotamian <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The scholarly teaching about God and about the belief of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theology<\/span> into the Anatolian-Syrian region.<\/p><p>While he remained the highest sky <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> in Sumer and Akkad into the first millennium BC, in the <a href=\"\/en\/hittite-anatolian-tarhunna-thousands-of-gods-and-protective-practice\/\">Hittite tradition<\/a> he is above all part of the theogonic <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A transmitted narrative about gods, origins, and the order of the world.\" tabindex=\"0\">myth<\/span> and scarcely appears independently in <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of religious acts of veneration for a deity or sacred figure.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult<\/span>. This difference between <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic study of God and the doctrines of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theological<\/span> position and cultic practice is illuminating for the history of religion.<\/p><p><span data-nosnippet>In <em>The Kingdom of the Hittites<\/em> (2005), Trevor Bryce pointed to Anu&#8217;s theological function as the &#8216;passed-over&#8217; king of heaven: his castration is the act of creation from which the younger divine regime emerges.<\/span><\/p><p>This position shapes his perception in Hittite religion more strongly than his independent profile. In <em>From Hittite to Homer<\/em> (2016), Mary Bachvarova traced in detail the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">transmission<\/span> of Anu from the Mesopotamian region through the Hurrian tradition into the Greek theogony as Uranus.<\/p><p>Compared with his Mesopotamian model, the Hittite Anu is therefore more a literary figure than a cultically living god. In Akkadian he is written as <em>Anu<\/em>, in Hittite logographically as DAN-NA or phonetically as <em>A-nu-u\u0161<\/em>. In the Hurrian Kumarbi Cycle he appears as <em>Anu\u0161<\/em>. In Hieroglyphic Luwian he is not independently attested; the logogram DEUS.CAELUM (&#8216;god of the sky&#8217;) points rather to other hypostases.<\/p><p>The theological meaning &#8216;sky&#8217; is extremely old in Sumerian and is understood in the theogony as a cosmic fundamental category. At Yaz\u0131l\u0131kaya he is not clearly identified. On some seals from Nuzi and Alala\u1e2b an &#8216;Anu with horned crown&#8217; may appear, but the identification is disputed. Volkert Haas has pointed out that Anu is more a &#8216;theological construct&#8217; than an iconographic figure.<\/p><p>In the Mesopotamian context he appears as an enthroned god with horned crown and scepter; in some late depictions with a frame of stars symbolizing the nocturnal sky. In the Hittite texts no specific animal or plant symbolism is assigned to him.<\/p><p>One particularity is his cosmic extension: Anu is simultaneously the supreme heavenly region and the personification of that region. This dual function makes him difficult to grasp iconographically.
