Cronus is the youngest of the Titans, son of Uranus and Gaia, father of Zeus. He castrates his father, devours his children, and is ultimately overthrown by Zeus. At the same time, his reign is regarded as the Golden Age.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Cronus belongs to the generation of the Titans, those divine lineages that in Greek<\/a> mythology<\/span> stand between the oldest primordial powers and the Olympian gods. He is the youngest son of the sky god Uranus and the earth goddess Gaia and assumes rule over the world after the fall of his father.<\/p>

Cronus is thus the central figure of the middle phase in the Greek creation myth<\/span>, the so-called succession mythology, in which rule over the world is passed down across three generations.<\/p>

From the perspective of religious studies<\/span>, Cronus is a dual figure. On one side stands the cruel ruler who mutilates his father and devours his own children to secure his power.<\/p>

On the other side stands the king of the Golden Age, under whose rule people lived carefree and without toil. This tension between figure of terror and king of peace makes Cronus a particularly revealing figure for understanding Greek conceptions of history and time.<\/p>

The most important source is Hesiod’s Theogony<\/em>, which recounts in detail the myth of the succession of world rulers.<\/p>

Alongside it stand numerous later accounts, mythographic works, and the identification with the Roman Saturn, which further developed the image of Cronus in antiquity<\/span>. The name Cronus is not securely interpreted linguistically. In antiquity<\/span> itself it was frequently associated with the Greek word for time, Chronos. This identification is untenable from a linguistic standpoint, since the two names are written and accented differently.<\/p>

Nevertheless, it had a great influence: already in antiquity<\/span>, especially in Stoic and Orphic speculation, Cronus was interpreted as the personification of time, which devours its own children, that is, everything that has come into being.<\/p>

Other ancient<\/span> interpretations connected the name with the verb for harvesting or with terms from the realm of agriculture, which fit his attribute, the sickle. These explanations too are folk-etymological and not secured.<\/p>

Modern scholarship tends to regard the name Cronus as pre-Greek, that is, as an inherited word from a linguistic layer spoken before the arrival of the Greek-speaking population in the Aegean. A secure etymology is not available.<\/p>

In the Roman tradition<\/span>, Cronus was identified with Saturn. This identification was so influential that many features of Cronus lived on in the Latin cultural sphere under the name Saturn, such as the notion of the Golden Age and the festival of the Saturnalia.<\/p>

The distinction between the Greek Cronus and the Roman Saturn is important in scholarship, because both figures underwent their own developments.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Cronus is depicted in the visual art of antiquity<\/span> less frequently and less uniformly than the Olympian gods. Where he appears, he is mostly shown as a bearded, mature man, dignified but without the youthful strength that characterizes Zeus, for instance.<\/p>

His distinctive attribute is the sickle or curved cutting implement with which, according to the myth<\/span>, he castrated his father Uranus. This implement, referred to in the sources as harpe, is his fixed emblem<\/span>.<\/p>

Cronus is often depicted with a veiled head, the garment drawn over the back of the head.<\/p>

This veiling was interpreted as a sign of his connection to the hidden, uncanny side of the world, or as a reference to his status as a deposed ruler banished into the depths. In the Roman iconography<\/span> of Saturn this feature continued.<\/p>

Scenes that illustrate the myth<\/span> show Cronus above all in two moments: at the castration of Uranus and at the devouring of his children.<\/p>

The latter scene, in which Cronus brings an infant to his mouth or receives a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes, was taken up especially in post-antique<\/span> art and is among the most striking images of all mythology<\/span>.<\/p>

In antiquity<\/span> itself, however, the calm, regal depiction predominates. As king of the Golden Age he was occasionally shown enthroned.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The story of Cronus begins with a conflict among the primordial powers. Uranus, the sky, united with Gaia, the earth, but kept their common children, among them the Titans, confined within the earth. Gaia, oppressed by this burden, devised a plan and fashioned a sickle of hard stone.<\/p>

Of all her children, it was Cronus alone, the youngest of the Titans, who declared himself willing to act against his father. When Uranus again approached Gaia, Cronus cut off his genitals and threw them into the sea.<\/p>

From the blood and the parts that fell into the sea, further beings arose, among them Aphrodite according to one tradition<\/span>, as well as the Erinyes and the Giants.<\/p>

With this blow Cronus became ruler over the world. He took his sister Rhea as his wife and fathered with her a series of children who became the first generation of the Olympian gods.<\/p>

But Uranus and Gaia had prophesied to Cronus that he too would be overthrown by one of his own sons. To escape this prophecy<\/span>, Cronus devoured each of his children immediately after birth: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon.<\/p>

When the sixth child, Zeus, was to be born, Rhea devised a ruse. She secretly gave birth to the infant on Crete and handed Cronus, instead of the child, a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes, which he unsuspectingly devoured. Zeus grew up in concealment.<\/p>

When he had matured, he forced Cronus to disgorge the devoured siblings again, first the stone, then the gods. There followed the great war between the Titans under Cronus and the younger gods under Zeus<\/a>, the Titanomachy.<\/p>

It ended with the victory of the Olympians. The defeated Titans were banished to Tartarus, the deepest region of the underworld.<\/p>

There are differing accounts of the later fate of Cronus. According to one version, he remains imprisoned in Tartarus.<\/p>

According to another, milder tradition, after his reconciliation he becomes ruler over the Isles of the Blessed, where the righteous dead lead a happy existence. This second line connects with the notion of the Golden Age, said to have prevailed under his rule.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Compared to the Olympian gods, the cult<\/span> of Cronus in Greece was of lesser scope, but it existed. The most important festival dedicated<\/span> to him was the Kronia, celebrated in Athens and elsewhere.<\/p>

They fell in the period after the harvest and had a distinctive character: on this day the social order was temporarily suspended or relaxed. Masters and slaves took part in the meal together; in some places the slaves were served by their masters.<\/p>

From the perspective of religious studies, this ritual<\/span> reversal is of great significance. For a limited period the festival restored the condition of the Golden Age, in which, according to the myth<\/span>, there had been no rule, no toil, and no social distinctions.<\/p>

The festival was thus a ritual commemoration of a lost primordial age of equality. The Roman Saturnalia, the festival of the Saturn identified with Cronus, had the same character and were celebrated even more elaborately.<\/p>

Sanctuaries<\/span> of Cronus are attested for several places, including Olympia, where the hill above the sanctuary<\/span> bore the name of the Titan. In Athens there was a shared precinct for Cronus and Rhea.<\/p>

The cult<\/span> nevertheless remained in the shadow of the great Olympian deities. Cronus was a deity<\/span> of the past, of the superseded world order, and this position was reflected in the limited but meaningful cultic presence.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Cronus was not a figure against whom a pronounced defensive practice was directed, such as existed against demons<\/span> or harmful spirits<\/span>. As a Titan deposed and banished into Tartarus, he was removed from the active sphere of influence in the world. An actual apotropaic<\/span> practice against Cronus is not transmitted.<\/p>

Nevertheless, the figure of Cronus carried an uncanny, threatening component that continued to resonate in the world of ideas. The child-devouring father was an image of terror.<\/p>

In the later interpretation, above all in the Roman and late-antique<\/span> reading in which Cronus was identified with Chronos, time, this aspect gained weight: time, which brings forth everything and destroys everything again, became the embodiment of transience. This interpretation, however, was philosophical and literary, not cultic.<\/p>

In the ritual sphere, rather the opposite of a warding-off is to be observed. The festival of the Kronia did not aim to keep the Titan away, but to bring back his time, the Golden Age, for a brief period.<\/p>

The festive relaxation of order was a controlled approach to the realm of Cronus. Where apotropaic notions were connected with Saturn, for instance in late-antique astrology, in which the planet Saturn was considered to bring misfortune, this is a development that reaches far beyond the Greek Cronus and belongs to Roman-Oriental astrology.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The myth<\/span> of the overthrow of the sky father and the succession of world rulers has close parallels in the cultures of the Ancient Near East and Asia Minor. Comparative scholarship has uncovered far-reaching connections here since the twentieth century.<\/p>

The clearest correspondence is offered by the Hittite myth<\/span> of Kingship in Heaven, transmitted on cuneiform tablets from Asia Minor. There the god Kumarbi castrates his predecessor Anu by biting off his genitals, and is himself overthrown by a later generation of gods.<\/p>

The agreement with the Cronus narrative in the succession of ruling generations and in the motif<\/span> of castration is considered so close that a historical connection, an adoption or a shared eastern heritage, is generally assumed.<\/p>

In Babylonian creation poetry too there is a generational succession of gods with violent transfers of power. In Norse mythology<\/span> the conflict between primordial giants and younger gods stands in a distant thematic proximity.<\/p>

The motif<\/span> of the Golden Age in turn, the effortless primordial time under a benevolent ruler, has correspondences in many cultures, from the Ancient Near Eastern notion of a paradisiacal original state to Indian conceptions of world ages.<\/p>

Cronus thus combines two thematic complexes, both of which are widespread: the violent succession of the gods and the lost primordial age of bliss. Scholarship sees in the Greek theogony an independent reworking of material that derives to a considerable extent from the Near East.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Cronus remains present today above all through two strands of influence. The first is the identification with time. Through ancient<\/span> speculation, medieval allegory, and early modern art, the figure of the aged Father Time arose, with sickle and hourglass, a fusion of Cronus, Chronos, and Saturn.<\/p>

The second strand is the image of the child-devouring Titan, which found striking depictions in the visual art of the modern era and became a fixed motif<\/span> of European art history.<\/p>

In popular culture Cronus appears frequently, mostly in the role of the overpowering, threatening primordial god, often merged with features of other Titans or confused with the name Chronos. The term Saturnalia too has entered general usage as a designation for exuberant festivity.<\/p>

Research in religious studies has treated Cronus on several levels. At the center has long stood the question of the Oriental roots of the succession mythology. Martin Litchfield West and others have worked out the connections to the Hittite and Babylonian tradition<\/span>.<\/p>

Alongside it stands the study of the Cronus cult and of the festival of the Kronia, which has attracted great interest as an example of ritual reversal.<\/p>

Walter Burkert<\/span> situated Cronus within the history of Greek religion<\/span>, Fritz Graf within myth research, Timothy Gantz compiled the sources. Cronus remains a key example of how the Greeks thought about the origin of the world, about the emergence of order, and about a lost better time.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
