data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Mezuzah is a small parchment, inscribed with two passages from the fifth book of Moses, rolled up and fixed in a case to the right doorpost of Jewish homes.<\/p><p>In biblical Hebrew the word mezuzah originally means nothing more than doorpost. The term only came to refer to the object hanging on this post in rabbinic usage.<\/p><p>The scroll is called klaf and consists of the parchment of a kosher animal. It is written with indelible black ink and a quill, by a trained scribe, the sofer.<\/p><p>The letter form must correspond exactly to one of two permitted styles, the Ashkenazi ktav Beit Yosef or the Sephardic ktav Ari. A single faulty or damaged letter renders the Mezuzah halachically invalid.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azmezs2 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"azmezs2\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azmezs2h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"azmezs2h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The text on the Klaf<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azmezs2b e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"azmezs2b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azmezs2t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"azmezs2t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Two text passages appear on the Mezuzah. The first is Devarim 6:4 to 9, the Shema Israel with the affirmation of the unity of God and the commandment to write these words &#8220;on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates&#8221;.<\/p><p>The second is Devarim 11:13 to 21, the text of promise and obedience. On the back of the scroll the letter shin usually appears, which stands for one of the names of God, Shaddai, and which in popular interpretation is also read as an acronym for &#8220;Guardian of the doors of Israel&#8221;.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azmezs3 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"azmezs3\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azmezs3h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"azmezs3h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Halachic rules concerning the Mezuzah<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azmezs3b e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"azmezs3b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azmezs3t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"azmezs3t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Affixing the Mezuzah is a positive commandment, a mitzvah aseh, which is obligatory for Jewish homes.<\/p><p>The Shulchan Aruch, the most important rabbinic legal work of the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Epoch roughly from the 15th to the 18th century.\" tabindex=\"0\">early modern period<\/span>, regulates the obligation in Yoreh De&#8217;ah 285 to 291. According to this, the obligation applies to every entrance to a living space with at least four cubits of interior area, with two doorposts and a lintel.<\/p><p>Bathrooms, toilets and rooms with unworthy use are exempt. The obligation also only applies after thirty days of residence.<\/p><p>It is affixed to the right post upon entering, in the upper third of the height. In the Ashkenazi <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A handed-down action regularly repeated within a community.\" tabindex=\"0\">custom<\/span> the scroll is fixed at an angle leaning inward, in the Sephardic <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A handed-down action regularly repeated within a community.\" tabindex=\"0\">custom<\/span> vertically. The klaf is what is actually <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to the divine and thereby withdrawn from everyday use.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacred<\/span>, the case merely protection.<\/p><p>In Jewish art history, however, the case has developed into a genre of its own, from silver filigree work from the Ottoman region through lacquered wooden cases from Galicia to contemporary design pieces made of bronze, glass and even 3D-printed material.<\/p><p><span data-nosnippet>Collections such as the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Jewish Museum Berlin or the Magnes Collection in Berkeley document this variety. A Mezuzah case from Vienna around 1900 looks completely different from a Moroccan one from the 18th century, yet both hold the same klaf text.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azmezs5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"azmezs5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azmezs5h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"azmezs5h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Protective aspect in rabbinic discourse<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azmezs5b e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"azmezs5b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azmezs5t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"azmezs5t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Is the Mezuzah an <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A worn object to which a protective, harm-averting effect is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">amulet<\/span>? This has been debated in rabbinic literature since the Middle Ages. Maimonides, the Rambam, explicitly rejected the idea in the 12th century that the Mezuzah is a protective object in a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special actions or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magical<\/span> sense.<\/p><p>It is an object of remembrance and affirmation, not a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An object to which an effect of bringing about luck or success is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">talisman<\/span>. In childbed it was understood as protection against <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/lilith\/\" data-tooltip=\"Jewish-Mesopotamian tradition, associated in popular belief with childbed protection and ayin hara.\">Lilith<\/a>, the mythical child-snatcher of Jewish <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span>.<\/p><p>Young mothers and newborns were to be safeguarded by the Mezuzah and by additional <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A worn object to which a protective, misfortune-averting effect is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">amulets<\/span> bearing the names Senoy, Sansenoy and Semangelof, those three angels who appear as Lilith guardians in the Alphabet of Ben Sira.<\/p><p>The Mezuzah was also <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The petitioning or invoking address to a deity or power.\" tabindex=\"0\">invoked<\/span> against the <a href=\"\/en\/evil-eye\/\" data-tooltip=\"Hebrew for evil eye, the belief in harm caused by a gaze.\">ayin hara<\/a>, the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Widespread notion that an envious gaze from another person can cause harm.\" tabindex=\"0\">evil eye<\/span>.
