meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbol<\/span> with five outstretched fingers. It appears throughout the Mediterranean region, in North Africa, in the Near East and in parts of South Asia, worn as a pendant, painted on doors and walls, embroidered on fabrics or set into jewelry.<\/p><p>The name comes from the Semitic root chmsh, which denotes the number five, both in Hebrew (chamesh) and in Arabic (khams). The five refers to the five fingers of the hand and at the same time to a cultural numerical symbolism that plays a role in both religions.<\/p><p>Two main variants occur in its form. The symmetrical Hamsa shows a stylized hand with two thumbs, one on the right and one on the left, without anatomical accuracy but with graphic clarity.<\/p><p>The anatomical Hamsa follows the real shape of the hand with one thumb and four fingers. In the Arabic sphere it is called Khamsa or Hand of Fatima, named after Fatima az-Zahra, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad.<\/p><p>In Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands in place of an idea or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbol<\/span> is simply called Khamsa and belongs to everyday jewelry. In the Turkish-speaking world it appears together with the <a href=\"\/en\/nazar-boncugu-the-blue-protective-eye-against-the-evil-eye\/\" data-tooltip=\"Turkish blue glass eye, a classic protective object against the nazar.\">nazar boncu\u011fu<\/a>, the blue eye pendant, and complements it.<\/p><p>This parallel naming is no coincidence. The Hamsa is an example of a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands representatively for a concept or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbolic<\/span> form that cannot be assigned to a single <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religion<\/span> but has been associated, in several religious spheres, with its own particular narrative.<\/p><p>Scholars of religion describe this as a shared symbolic heritage, a term coined by the ethnologist Esther Juhasz for precisely this constellation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azhams3 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"azhams3\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azhams3h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"azhams3h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Early traces<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azhams3b e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"azhams3b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azhams3t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"azhams3t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The oldest possible precursors of the Hamsa come from the Phoenician sphere, roughly from the first centuries before our era. Researchers connect the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands in place of an idea or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbol<\/span> with the Hand of Tanit, a Punic goddess whose stelae were found in Carthage and on Sardinia.<\/p><p>On some of these stelae an open hand appears next to a moon and a solar symbol. Whether this is the direct precursor of the Hamsa or only a similar gesture is not fully settled in scholarship.<\/p><p>What is certainly documented: hand symbols as protection already appear in the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Epoch of Greek and Roman culture, roughly 800 BC to 600 AD.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancient<\/span> Egyptian and Mesopotamian visual world. An open hand can be read as a warding gesture, as a pose of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The ritual act by which blessing is bestowed.\" tabindex=\"0\">blessing<\/span> or as a sign of the presence of a protective power.<\/p><p>The Hamsa in its present form, however, only became established in the Middle Ages, above all in the Jewish-Arab symbiosis of the Andalusian and Maghrebi sphere.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azhams4 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"azhams4\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azhams4h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"azhams4h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Jewish tradition<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azhams4b e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"azhams4b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azhams4t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"azhams4t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In Jewish <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span> the Hamsa is often connected with the sister of Moses. Miriam appears in the Book of Exodus as a prophetess who accompanies the people through the Sea of Reeds.<\/p><p>In this reading, the Hand of Miriam stands for female protective power and for preserving the community. Another reading connects the five fingers with the five books of the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The five books of Moses, the foundational body of scripture in Judaism.\" tabindex=\"0\">Torah<\/span>.<\/p><p>In the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Religious ideas and customs that are widespread in everyday life.\" tabindex=\"0\">folk belief<\/span> of Sephardi and Mizrahi Judaism the Chamsa was regarded as effective against the <a href=\"\/en\/evil-eye\/\" data-tooltip=\"Hebrew for evil eye, the belief in harm caused by a glance.\">ayin hara<\/a>, the evil eye. It was attached to door frames, hung on babies&#8217; cradles or worn as a pendant.<\/p><p>In the Ashkenazi tradition of Central Europe it plays a lesser role, but through migration and cultural exchange it also became visible there in the 20th century.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azhams5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"azhams5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azhams5h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"azhams5h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Islamic tradition<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azhams5b e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"azhams5b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-azhams5t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"azhams5t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In Islamic tradition the Hamsa as the Hand of Fatima is closely connected with the daughter of the Prophet. Fatima az-Zahra is regarded as an ideal figure of female <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The lived religious attitude and practice of a person.\" tabindex=\"0\">piety<\/span> and as the mother of the Hasanids and Husaynids, that is, the descendants through Hasan and Husayn.<\/p><p>In the Shia context the five fingers are often associated with the five persons of the ahl al-bayt, namely Muhammad, Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Husayn.<\/p><p>In the Sunni context, above all in North Africa, the Khamsa is less theologically charged and more strongly rooted in folk belief.
