His death by the mistletoe sprig, guided by the hand of the blind H\u00f6dr through Loki&#8217;s cunning, is among the most haunting narratives of Norse <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span>.<\/p><p>Baldur is regarded as an <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A vivid image that stands for an abstract idea.\" tabindex=\"0\">emblem<\/span> of beauty, purity and innocent death. His seat is Breidablik, a hall in which nothing impure is tolerated. Baldur&#8217;s wife is Nanna, his son Forseti, the god of judgement.<\/p><p>Scholarship sees in Baldur a central figure of Eddic <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the transmitted divine narratives of a culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythology<\/span>, whose precise religious background remains contested. Sophus Bugge (1881-89) read him as a reflex of the Christian Christ figure, a thesis that is today largely rejected.<\/p><p>Karl Helm (1946) interpreted him as a thunder god, Georges Dum\u00e9zil (1953) as a dying and returning sovereign of the type of an Indo-European counterpart to Mitra. Jan de Vries and Rudolf Simek favour the reading of a god of light and sacrificial figure whose death marks the cosmological upheaval.<\/p><p>Saxo Grammaticus, in the \u00abGesta Danorum\u00bb (Book 3, around 1200), reports a markedly different version. Here Baldur is a demigod, son of Odin, who fights with H\u00f6dr (Hotherus) for the hand of the princess Nanna.<\/p><p>Baldur ultimately dies by a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special actions or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magical<\/span> sword that belonged to a woodland woman. This euhemerised version presents Baldur as a mortal hero and shifts the death onto a chivalric contest. Scholarship sees in both versions, the Eddic and the Saxonian, reflexes of an older, pre-literary tradition.<\/p><p>Saxo Grammaticus&#8217; euhemerised version in the \u00abGesta Danorum\u00bb (Book 3) deserves particular attention. In Saxo, Baldur is a Danish-Norwegian demigod, son of Odin, who fights with the Swedish prince Hotherus (H\u00f6dr) for the hand of the princess Nanna.<\/p><p>The conflict extends over several battles, and Baldur is finally killed by a magical sword that Hotherus received from a woodland woman. This version differs fundamentally from the Eddic one: there is no mistletoe <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A recurring thematic element in art or narrative.\" tabindex=\"0\">motif<\/span> here, no innocent <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A gift to a deity, to express thanks, petition or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacrifice<\/span>, no blind brother, but rather a conventional heroic combat over a woman.<\/p><p>Scholarship has, since Sophus Bugge&#8217;s \u00abStudies\u00bb (1881-89), discussed the relationship between the two versions. Some researchers (Bugge, Olrik) saw in Saxo&#8217;s version a late distortion that reduced the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Synonymous with heathen; belonging to a pre-Christian religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">pagan<\/span> to the heroic.<\/p><p>Others (Dum\u00e9zil, von See) read it as an alternative tradition that preserves an older, less sacralised Baldur <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A transmitted narrative about gods, origins and the order of the world.\" tabindex=\"0\">myth<\/span>. Today&#8217;s scholarship tends toward a multi-layered reading: both versions reflect real but distinct mythic traditions, whose relationship was not linear but complementary.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-55da0bd e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"55da0bd\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-93689d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"93689d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Symbols and Attributes<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8c64625 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8c64625\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Baldur&#8217;s most important attribute is his radiant appearance. Snorri describes him as so bright that rays emanate from him. The plant named after him, baldursbra (Matricaria, chamomile), carries this bright symbolism into <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Religious ideas and customs that are widespread in everyday life.\" tabindex=\"0\">folk belief<\/span>. In Denmark and Sweden the plant was used until the 19th century as protection against evil <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirits<\/span>.<\/p><p>His hall Breidablik (\u00abbroadly gleaming\u00bb) is mentioned in \u00abGrimnismal\u00bb 12: \u00abBreidablik is the seventh (hall), where Baldur has chosen his dwelling, in the land I know to be least impure\u00bb.<\/p><p>His ship Hringhorni is held to be the largest of all ships; on it Baldur is burned after his death. His horse is mentioned in \u00abGrimnismal\u00bb 30, though its name is not handed down.<\/p><p>The mistletoe sprig, with which he is killed, is his paradoxical counter-attribute. The mistletoe (Viscum album) was regarded in <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Epoch of Greek and Roman culture, roughly 800 BCE to 600 CE.\" tabindex=\"0\">antiquity<\/span> as <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to the divine and thereby withdrawn from everyday use.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacred<\/span> and is described in the \u00abNaturalis Historia\u00bb of Pliny (Book 16, 95) as a plant cut by the Celtic druids.<\/p><p>In Germanic folk tradition the mistletoe sprig lives on as an ambivalent <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands in place of an idea or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbol<\/span>: protective and deadly at once. James George <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"James George Frazer (1854-1941); British anthropologist; main work The Golden Bough (1890-1915).\" tabindex=\"0\">Frazer<\/span> made this ambiguity, in \u00abThe Golden Bough\u00bb (1890), the central <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands in place of an idea or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbol<\/span> of his comparative <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the transmitted divine narratives of a culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythology<\/span>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-80cb920 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"80cb920\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7bdec8e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7bdec8e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Cult and Veneration<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e85c1dd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e85c1dd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Direct cultic evidence for Baldur is rare. Adam of Bremen does not mention him. Place names with the Baldr element are found above all in Norway (Baldrshagi, \u00abBaldur&#8217;s <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sacred stand of trees that served as a place of worship.\" tabindex=\"0\">grove<\/span>\u00bb) and are few in number compared with Thor or Odin place names.<\/p><p>Folke Strom read this thin trace as an indication that Baldur was primarily a literary figure of the late Eddic phase, rather than a widely venerated <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of religious acts of veneration for a deity or sacred figure.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult<\/span> <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span>.<\/p><p>The \u00abFriedland <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A transmitted narrative often with a historical core and miraculous features.\" tabindex=\"0\">Saga<\/span>\u00bb and other Icelandic sources mention Baldur&#8217;s death in a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An ordered sequence of symbolic actions with religious or cultural meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">ritual<\/span>-mythic context, but without explicit cult forms.<\/p><p>Snorri&#8217;s description of the funeral in Gylfaginning 49 is the most detailed account of a divine burial in the Edda: the ship is laden with wood, the giantess Hyrrokin pushes it into the water, Thor consecrates the pyre with the hammer Mj\u00f6llnir, and a dwarf is crushed because he comes too close to Thor.<\/p><p>This scene reads like a mythic model for historical ship burials, such as the Viking-age finds at Oseberg (834 CE) and Gokstad (late 9th century).<\/p><p>R\u00e9gis Boyer argued, in \u00abLa <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religion<\/span> des anciens Scandinaves\u00bb (1981), that the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A transmitted narrative about gods, origins and the order of the world.\" tabindex=\"0\">myth<\/span> of Baldur&#8217;s death and return mirrored an <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A ritual transition through which someone is admitted into a new status or community.\" tabindex=\"0\">initiation<\/span> or seasonal ritual, probably connected with the solstice. Snorri recounts in Gylfaginning 49: Baldur dreams of his own death. Frigg, his mother, has all beings swear an oath not to harm him.<\/p><p>Only the mistletoe she passes over, because she considers it too young. The Aesir amuse themselves by hurling projectiles at Baldur, which do not strike him. Loki, in a woman&#8217;s form, draws the secret from Frigg.<\/p><p>He fashions an arrow from mistletoe wood and gives it to the blind H\u00f6dr, guides his hand, and H\u00f6dr strikes Baldur fatally. The Aesir are speechless with grief. Hermod, Baldur&#8217;s brother, rides on Sleipnir to Hel to plead for Baldur&#8217;s return.<\/p><p>Hel consents, on condition that all beings weep for Baldur. All weep, save one old giantess named Th\u00f6kk, behind whom Loki is concealed, who withholds her tear. Baldur remains in Hel until after the Ragnar\u00f6k.<\/p><p>The \u00abVoluspa\u00bb 31-33 tells the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A transmitted narrative about gods, origins and the order of the world.\" tabindex=\"0\">myth<\/span> briefly and in condensed form. Central here above all are the stanzas on H\u00f6dr&#8217;s fate and Vali, the avenging son begotten by Odin, who kills H\u00f6dr.<\/p><p>This genealogy shows that Baldur&#8217;s death is not the end of the story: it generates a chain of vengeance that culminates in the Ragnar\u00f6k.<\/p><p>The third <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A transmitted narrative about gods, origins and the order of the world.\" tabindex=\"0\">myth<\/span> is Baldur&#8217;s return after the world-fire. The \u00abVoluspa\u00bb 62 describes how the earth rises from the sea, how Baldur and H\u00f6dr are reconciled, how a new world dawns.<\/p><p>This return of Baldur is one of the strongest motifs of Norse eschatology and has a long history of influence in the Christian reception of Norse <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the transmitted divine narratives of a culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythology<\/span>.<\/p><p>A particularly haunting episode is Hermod&#8217;s ride to Hel to free Baldur. Snorri recounts in detail in Gylfaginning 49: Hermod rides nine nights through dark, deep valleys, crosses the golden bridge Gjallarbru, whose guardian Modgudr asks him about his errand, and finally reaches Hel&#8217;s hall.<\/p><p>There Baldur sits upon the high seat, and Hel promises to release him if all beings mourn him.<\/p><p>Hermod returns with this message. The Aesir send messengers into all the worlds, and all beings weep, except one old giantess named Th\u00f6kk, who sits in the cave. She says: \u00abWith dry eyes shall Th\u00f6kk weep for Baldur. Let Hel keep what she has!\u00bb Snorri notes that many believe this Th\u00f6kk was Loki.<\/p><p>Scholarship has read the Hermod episode as one of the most important pieces of evidence for the shamanistic background of Norse <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the transmitted divine narratives of a culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythology<\/span>. This antagonism is increasingly emphasised in the later tradition and culminates in the image of Loki as the destroyer of order.<\/p><p>To Hel, daughter of Loki and mistress of the underworld, Baldur stands as her special guest. Hermod must ride nine nights through dark valleys to reach Hel&#8217;s hall. There she receives him upon the high seat, with Baldur at her side. Sophus Bugge developed this thesis in detail in \u00abStudies on the Origin of the Norse Tales of Gods and Heroes\u00bb (1881-89).<\/p><p>Today the Christ thesis is regarded as overdrawn, though some parallels (dying and returning god, innocent <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A gift to a deity, to express thanks, petition or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacrifice<\/span>, cosmic consequences) are nonetheless typologically acknowledged.<\/p><p>Jacob Grimm devoted a chapter of his own to Baldur in the \u00abGerman <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the transmitted divine narratives of a culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">Mythology<\/span>\u00bb (1835). He saw in him the god of light par excellence. In the 19th century Baldur became popular in Norse Romanticism and painting.<\/p><p>Adam \u00d6hlenschl\u00e4ger&#8217;s \u00abBaldur hin gode\u00bb (1808) is a dramatic treatment of the material. Criticism came from Jonathan Z. Smith (\u00abDrudgery Divine\u00bb, 1990), who criticised the typological equation as too sweeping.<\/p><p>Georges Dum\u00e9zil sought, in \u00abLoki\u00bb (1948) and \u00abMythe et epop\u00e9e\u00bb (1968-73), to place Baldur within the Indo-European three-functions model. Smith showed in \u00abDrudgery Divine\u00bb (1990) that the typological equation of Baldur, Christ, Adonis, Osiris and Tammuz conceals more differences than commonalities.<\/p><p>Christ is a messianic figure of salvation, Adonis a vegetative subject of the mysteries of love, Osiris a cosmogonic king, Tammuz an agrarian vegetation <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A spiritual being to which harmful or ambivalent effects are attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">demon<\/span>. Baldur does not fit unambiguously into these series. His specificity lies in the combination of cosmological harbinger of the Ragnar\u00f6k and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands in place of an idea or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbol<\/span> of hope for the renewal after the downfall.<\/p><p>In comparative Indo-European research, Baldur has repeatedly been compared with the Indian Tvashtar, the Celtic Lug and the Lithuanian Velinas. These comparisons are typological and not genetically compelling.
