personification of the Yamuna river and twin sister of the death god Yama; both are children of the sun god Surya. The Rigveda records their dialogue, in which Yama rejects her wooing for offspring as incest.<\/p>\n<p>As Kalindi she is counted among Krishna&#8217;s eight principal consorts and, according to legend, opened a path through her waters for Vasudeva.
