When her husband breaks the taboo and publicly calls her a serpent, the house loses its blessing and retains a herald of death.<\/p>\n<p>Early forms of the tale already appear around 1190\/1210 in the works of the clerics Walter Map and Gervase of Tilbury. After the betrayal she appears as a winged serpent or dragoness, flying wailing around the towers. Art has captured above all two moments: the woman spied upon in the bathtub and the one fleeing over the castle. In heraldry she lives on as a two-tailed mermaid, an image that has even migrated into the logo of a world-famous coffeehouse chain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Effect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As long as the taboo holds, Melusine&#8217;s effect is purely beneficial: she has land cleared and built upon, increases wealth and standing, and gives the house ten sons. After the breach, the effect reverses without Melusine becoming evil.
