By day he swims in the river as a dolphin, at night he transforms into a good-looking man in a white suit who seduces young women at festivals and returns to the river before sunrise.<\/p>\n<p>The story is a creation of northern Brazil with indigenous roots and was documented ethnographically and folkloristically in the 20th century, above all by the folklorist Lu\u00eds da C\u00e2mara Cascudo. In the river communities of the Amazon basin, it often served to explain the pregnancy of an unmarried woman; such children were popularly regarded as a child of the In other strands of the tale, he draws bathers into the underwater world Encante, from which there is no return. The Boto thus embodies the ambivalence of the river, seductive and dangerous, yet also a protector, for he is regarded as the rescuer of shipwrecked people, especially women, whom he pushes to the
