Company, is the Galician procession of the dead: from midnight onwards it moves through the village paths in white hooded robes and with burning candles, led by a living person carrying a cross and holy water. Whoever encounters it risks the curse of becoming the leader themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The belief is deeply rooted in Galicia and Asturias and extends into northern Portugal and the Spanish region of El Bierzo. Often it is not seen at all, but recognised only by the smell of wax, distant lights and small bells. Its symbolism stands between a Catholic procession and a pagan procession of the dead, and represents the Christianised form of an older belief in the dead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Effect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The nocturnal procession from midnight onwards is an announcement of death. Whoever is addressed, or takes the cross or candle from the leader&#8217;s hand, takes their place and may themselves fall to
