and causes paralysis, pressure and breathlessness. Unlike Mae Nak or other spirits with a fixed form, he has no image of his own: he is pure weight, pure oppression.<\/p>\n<p>The term Phi Am denotes both the experience and the spirit held responsible for it, and is used by laypeople and medical staff alike for what is called sleep paralysis in Western terminology.<\/p>\n<p>The spirit is sometimes linked to a lonely or betrayed death, but for the
