to die young, who then returns again and again to the same family. It belongs to a spirit community whose members have agreed among themselves to die early and return home to the spirit world Orun.<\/p>\n<p>The name \u00e0b\u00edk\u00fa combines \u00e0b\u00ed, the one born, with ik\u00fa, death. According to the ethnographer Timothy Mobolade, the Abiku form their own species of spirit with their own dwelling places: secluded corners, the forest and roadsides, especially beneath large trees such as the iroko and the baobab.<\/p>\n<p>For the mother and the family, the child&#8217;s pact with its spirit community means repeated suffering: every birth is met with the suspicion that the same
