Offerings are brought to them at small shrines; they protect the community as long as they are shown due respect.<\/p>\n<p>Their veneration predates Buddhism but blends seamlessly with Theravada Buddhism: the Buddha and the monastic community point towards liberation, while the local spirits attend to everyday concerns such as the harvest, illness and protection. The shrine&#8217;s contents of stone, termite mound, linga or wooden figure symbolise the dual nature of land element and spirit element.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Effect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Neak Ta protects the surrounding community and provides for the harvest, health and order, as long as it is shown respect and offerings.
