mountain wilderness, recognisable by his goat legs, horns and the reed pipe Syrinx. The word panic derives from him, the sudden fright with no visible cause. After the Battle of Marathon, Athens officially admitted him into its civic cult.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/satyr\/\">Satyrs<\/a> of his entourage, Pan is a god with a proper cult, with offerings, grottoes and sanctuaries; The syrinx carries its own legend: the nymph Syrinx escapes the god by transforming into a reed, from which he then cuts the pipe. On Attic votive reliefs, he leaps small and goat-footed at the edge of the nymphs&#8217; round dance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Effect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pan protects flocks, increases the fertility of goats and sheep and grants hunting luck. His feared effect is panic terror: a sudden, contagious fear that, without any discernible cause, drives flocks into wild flight and armies into disarray.
