spirits of German folklore. They are regarded as shy forest neighbours, mostly well disposed towards humans, who repay gifts with advice and blessing, as long as forest and custom are respected.<\/p>\n<p>They became known above all as the quarry of the Wild Hunter, from whom only a tree stump with three cut crosses can save them. Their appearance blurs with the forest itself: those who do not look closely mistake them for tree stumps or mossy stones. The moss symbolises age, weathering and the quiet side of the forest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Effect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The legends portray the Moosleute as helpful neighbours: they borrow household items, ask for bread or milk, show healing herbs, give advice in cases of illness among people and livestock, and help unasked with the harvest. They repay gifts generously; in some tales, wood chips or leaves given as gifts turn into gold. They react sensitively to offence: whoever bakes them bread with caraway loses their blessing, as recorded in the cry Caraway bread, our death!
