historical Dahomey, present-day Benin, Togo and south-west Nigeria. Deep in the forest, in silk-cotton trees and termite mounds, they gave people spiritual and practical knowledge, especially teaching hunters Vodun herbal lore and hunting magic.<\/p>\n<p>They are considered wholly benevolent: anyone who approaches them roughly or greedily is not punished but simply left to their own devices. They dwell deep in the forest, in the trunks and roots of silk-cotton trees and in termite mounds, both threshold places to the spirit world in West African tradition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Effect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Aziza taught humankind important knowledge, including the use of fire. To hunters they conveyed spiritual and practical knowledge of forest, herbs and hunting, as well as hunting magic.
