sky and the wondrous object Sampo. His name marks him as an air and sky being; in epic tradition, however, he is primarily the smith hero.<\/p>\n<p>The central source is the national epic Kalevala, which Elias L\u00f6nnrot compiled in 1835 and 1849 from oral rune-song tradition, alongside older magic and incantation songs, in which Ilmarinen is invoked, for instance, as the originator of iron and Etymology and the older layer mark him as an air and sky deity, the creator of the sky; in weather control he was partly overshadowed by the thunder and weather god Ukko.
