Norg or Norggen, is a small mountain and earth spirit of South Tyrol, a dwarf or goblin of ambivalent nature: partly helpful, partly mischievous. When helpful, it acts as farmhand, feeding and milking the cattle and grinding grain at night; when mischievous, it pulls away the milking stool, spills milk and occupies bridges.<\/p>\n<p>Despite appearances, its name has nothing to do with the verb n\u00f6rgeln (to grumble): the established scholarly interpretation traces it back to the Latin Orcus, the god of the underworld, via the sound chain Orco to Lork and Norg.
