companion figure of Saint Nicholas in the eastern Alpine region: horned, hairy and equipped with chains and a birch rod, while Nicholas rewards the well-behaved. The figure is documented pictorially since 1582 in Die\u00dfen am Ammersee, and as an independent postcard figure only since the mid-19th century.<\/p>\n<p>In the Krampus runs from Salzburg to Carinthia, he still appears today as a noisy, terrifying demon figure of the winter season, with a carved wooden mask, a rattling chain and a rod of birch twigs.
